The Story
I didn’t go to New Hall Mill looking for romance.
I carry the weight of running my father’s farm on my shoulders. With his health failing and my work never-ending, there’s no room for vanity or the foolish dreams of a girl. When I drove my wagon down the track in the middle of a sudden spring storm, I expected the same leers I usually endured from the repugnant old miller. Instead, I found Samuel Wolsey, a new master miller, ambitious, kind, and with a smile that warmed me to the cockles of my heart. Just one look at him, with his flour-dusted arms and his steady, caring gaze, and my world shifted on its axis. A spark ignited that I never saw coming, and I found a sanctuary that I never knew I was searching for. But with a farm to save and a father who needs me, do I dare to let a man like Samuel into my life?
The Background
This story is set in 1795 and ends in 1798. Although this is a fictional tale, the story is inspired by real events and locations. Central to these is New Hall Mill, a working watermill near Sutton Coldfield, where William Twamley was the leaseholder during the Regency period.
New Hall Water Mill is privately owned and surrounded by the New Hall Valley Country Park. The mill is open to the general public on open days. New volunteers who would like to assist on work days or open days can get in touch via the mill's website.
